Oil Change Service

For your Nissan to uphold optimal performance throughout its lifespan, you must keep up with recommended maintenance and inspection. Oil changes are one of the most important aspects of maintenance, which will ensure safety and performance while you're behind the wheel of a Nissan. Unlike older Nissan models which called for conventional oil, Nissan now recommends that new models use synthetic oil. This means you can go longer between service appointments and your vehicle's longevity is improved. Nissan recommends having your oil changed every 7,500 miles.

How To Tell If Your Vehicle Needs An Oil Change

Routine oil changes are a crucial aspect of vehicle maintenance and ensure the upheld performance and longevity of your vehicle throughout its lifespan. Here are a few things that might indicated your engine oil needs to be changed:

Oil Level and Color
Use the dipstick to check vehicle's engine oil level and examine the color of the oil - if the level is low or the oil is a dark brown or black, it's time for an oil change.

Conventional oil typically requires a 3,000-mile change interval, while synthetic typically lasts for a 6,000-mile change interval. Consult our service center or your vehicle's owner manual to determine your proper oil change interval.

Rough Engine Idle
As the oil cracks and becomes less efficient at lubricating your engine's components, a rough idle and less smooth performance may be encountered.

Synthetic or Conventional?

There are differing opinions on whether synthetic or conventional oil is best for your vehicle. However, research and real-world use have determined that synthetic oil has many advantages over conventional oil. Advantages of synthetic oil include:

  • Unlike conventional oil, synthetic oil is not affected by the temperature, therefore it does not thicken in the cold or thin in the heat. This is important when you start your vehicle and the oil needs to quickly move to the upper engine.
  • Synthetic oil has a greater shear strength at the molecular level, meaning that the oil can not be torn due to the extreme pressure of tight tolerances.
  • Synthetic oil is free of paraffin-like impurities that are often found in conventional oil.
  • Synthetic oil offers additive packages of detergents and friction modifiers.
  • Although synthetic oil costs more per quart, it offers a longer oil change interval of up to 10,000 miles.

  • Nissan now specifically recommends synthetic oil for new models, using different oil may void the factory warranty. Being a low-viscosity oil, it will reduce internal friction and make a more efficient engine.

How to Check Oil Level

Checking your Nissan's oil levels regularly ensures your vehicle will run properly and safely. Nissan recommends that you check your Nissan's oil level once a month, and before long trips. A convenient and reliable time to check your oil level is while you're filling up your gas tank. Follow the steps below to efficiently and accurately check your oil levels:

  • Run your Nissan until the engine has reached normal operating temperature.
  • Park on a level surface, and turn off the engine.
  • Allow your engine to cool down for a few minutes.
  • Open the hood of your vehicle.
  • Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, and reinsert it.
  • Withdraw the dipstick and hold it horizontally so the oil does not drip.
  • Examine the dipstick to assess whether the oil level is between the minimum and maximum marks.
  • If the oil level is below the minimum level, top off your oil.
  • Each Nissan model has different requirements, so review your owner's manual for the appropriate oil.

Oil Types

Different vehicles and driving styles require different types and grades of oil. We have many types of oil available to suit various driving styles, including a high mileage option. Our available oil types include conventional, high mileage, synthetic blend oil, and full synthetic.

Multi Point Inspection

While our team performs our oil change service, they also scour your vehicle for any additional service requirements. Checking everything from fluid levels to your serpentine belt, our service technicians ensure your vehicle leaves our shop in optimal condition and alerts you to any upcoming service requirements your vehicle may need.

Why Change Your Oil Regularly?

While synthetic oils typically last longer than conventional oil, both oil types require consistent and regularly scheduled changes to ensure your vehicle remains in optimal condition. Regularly changed oil is both a preventative insurance against engine deterioration, and a crucial maintenance task to ensure your vehicle remains running smoothly and safely throughout its lifespan.

Recommended Maintenance Schedule

To ensure your Nissan always performs its best, it is important to keep up with its recommended routine maintenance. In addition to keeping up with Nissan's recommended maintenance schedule, it is also recommended that you self-assess your tires, oil, and brake pads once a month. Keeping up with regular maintenance and inspections will ensure that your Nissan always performs optimally, will improve the lifespan of your vehicle, and even save you time and money. At South Austin Nissan, we will complete any maintenance and repairs using genuine Nissan OEM parts and components. Recommended Nissan service intervals include:
